02/17: MSU sheds a new ray of light on the health hazards of nanoparticles
The nose, usually the first line of defense against inhaling airborne particles that could damage the lungs, may also be sensitive to the dangers of nanoparticles, according to a study presented by researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) in a seminar of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, entitled "Nanotechnology 2006: Toxicology of Nanoparticles."
The study states that combustion derived nanoparticles (CDNP) have the ability to accumulate in the nasal airways, causing a number of conditions, including rhinitis or inflammation of the mucous membranes .
Most toxicological studies of inhaled nanoparticles have focused on their damaging effects on the lungs. However, the nasal toxicity of the nanoparticles had not been previously examined.
